While it is a nice kit employing the latest in molding technology, most of us modelers are not content with that out of the box look anymore. 6 Posted FebruMoveable snorkel works quite well, only glue the keeper in place, the rest sets quite nicely so it can be posed in use or stowed in the deck. It even appears to be converting a few armor modelers to the ship building realm. There are 2 bulkheads which assist alignment and don’t forget the rear under the waterline torpedo hatch. This type would go onto become the most used German submarines of WWII with over 700 being built. 1/72 Type VIIc U-boat Photo etch set by White Ensign models The new Revell U-Boat is proving to be a popular new kit. This is Revell of Germany’s 1/72 scale U-552 Type VIIC WWII German U-boat I finished in 2005. I made these two models after being inspired by the work of Won-hui Lee, the first is a Type VIIC U-Boat (U-96) firing a torpedo, which was the main model I was going for, and includes some photo-etch detailing and wires, etc, the second is a Type VIIC/41 (U-998) which I made as a testbed for the resin application, so is pretty much out of the box other than the periscope, which is brass (the top of which is broken off) and the snorkel, which I had to scratch build as I melted the kit one (oops!).Īll in all I'm happy with the result, although I did have some issues with the resin, mainly the bubbles in the U-96 cast which I think happened because I didn't fill and seal the model properly, so some air was able to escape, although I was able to move a lot of them over to the torpedo before they set, which I think adds to the effect and the visible resin layering in the U-998 cast, which I solved in the main cast by switching to a slow setting resin and doing it in one pour. No wonder everyone from producer Joel Silver to movie set designers to product. This new photo-etch set from U-Brass, will aid the modeler in correcting the inaccuracies of Revell Models’ 1/72 scale VIIC Submarine model kit, and the newly released VIIC/41.
